On the morning of March 7, the inauguration ceremony for the Global Innovation Center of ACWA Power (Saudi Arabian International Power and Water Company) was held at Waigaoqiao New Exhibition City, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. As a representative of advanced green energy technology, the team led by Professor Wu Jianbo from the Future Materials Creation Center at Zhangjiang Institute for Advanced Study, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (ZIAS), signed an international memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ACWA Power.Wu Jincheng (Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Government and Deputy Secretary of the Pudong New Area Party Committee, and District Mayor), Zhang Xi (Deputy Director of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Administration), Tian Changlin (Executive Dean of ZIAS), and other guests attended the inauguration and witnessed the signing ceremony.

The signing of this MOU marks a new chapter in ZIAS’s industrial development in the field of advanced green energy. In the future, ZIAS will continue to cooperate with Pudong New Area, leveraging its role as a key support hub in the construction of Zhangjiang Science City.By actively sharing resources with the ACWA Power Global Innovation Center, the two parties aim to accelerate the industrial application of green energy, rely on their advantages in talent and scientific research, and contribute more significantly to regional collaborative development in alignment with China’s strategic goals of developing new productive forces.
The ACWA Power Global Innovation Center is equipped with advanced laboratory facilities and will focus on five key areas: photovoltaics, wind power, energy storage, green hydrogen, and seawater desalination. With an initial investment of 20 million RMB, the center currently includes an “R&D Center” and a “Green Energy Laboratory.”It has also been awarded one of the first batch of Large Enterprise Open Innovation Centers (GOI) in Pudong New Area in 2024.
Professor Wu Jianbo serves as Assistant Dean of ZIAS, Deputy Director of the Future Materials Creation Center, Deputy Director of the Hydrogen Science Center, and Professor and Doctoral Advisor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His team has achieved internationally leading breakthroughs in the development of non-precious metal catalysts, membrane electrode assemblies, metallic component design, and electrolyzer assembly control. They have extensive experience in the development of low-cost, high-efficiency, and high-safety AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) electrolysis systems.
